1. YouTube

YouTube, of course, is the most popular go-to for sharing video and was one of the first major supporters to jump onto the HTML5 video bandwagon. Of course, as YouTube is heavily ad-dependent, they must ensure fallback capabilities for ads and non-HTML5 video supporting browsers. Embedding YouTube’s HTML5 video requires an iFrame; see how here.

2. Vimeo

Vimeo, like YouTube, is a popular site for sharing your videos that implemented HTML5 video playback early this year. Vimeo also uses an iFrame for HTML5 video embedding as it’s necessary for ads.

3. Blip.tv

Blip.tv started offering HTML5 video playback at the beginning of October this year, although doesn’t yet appear to be offering HTML5 video embedding just yet. You can read more about their transition into HTML5 video via their blog. It has great integration with other social networks and video services though that will help get you more views.

4. Viddler

Viddler, while offering a free version, seems to be focused more towards professional users looking to make money from their videos. The default player, while not nearly as well designed as YouTube’s, is more customizable.

VP Factory

5. VP Factory

VP Factory is an entirely different beast than sites like YouTube or Vimeo. VP Factory is a full on, cloud-based, video management app with highly customizable video player and many more fantastic features. We reviewed VP Factory earlier this year (Manage, Publish and Embed Videos with VP Factory) and were quite impressed, although they’ve since made tremendous improvements and we’ll be re-reviewing the app later this week.

SublimeVideo
SublimeVideo

6. SublimeVideo

SublimeVideo is arguably one of the sexiest designed HTML5 video players I’ve seen so far, with some really great features. It’s still in beta so you’ll have to request an invite but it’s certainly promising. SublimeVideo is also a player only, which has its benefits, so you’ll have to have your own video hosting. We’ll have a review of SublimeVideo posted very soon as well, so stay tuned!
  • Price: Free during beta
  • Video Storage: No
  • Fallback Support: Yes
  • Embedding: HTML5 and Flash
VideoJS

7. VideoJS

VideoJS, like SublimeVideo, only offers the video player (although their partner, zencoder, offers video encoding and hosting) but it’s an absolutely gorgeous and fast player. Unlike SublimeVideo, however, VideoJS is a download rather than a hosted player. A neat feature is they offer skins similar to popular video players like YouTube and Hulu.

  • Fallback Support: Yes
  • Embedding: HTML5 and Flash

8. (Kaltura) HTML5Video.org

Kaltura is another standalone HTML5 video player, actually used by Wikipedia and many others (including SublimeVideo?), that’s also skinable and easy to extend.

9. JW Player

JW Player, by LongTail Video, is another sexy, skinable open source player with a Pro version as a paid option for a few additional features. AddOns are also available to extend the players functionality. If you need hosting, LongTail Video also offers a solution for that.

10. Flickr

Although primarily known for its photo storage and sharing capabilities, Flickr also offers video uploading and sharing options. Unfortunately Flickr has certain limitations on video such as a 90 second length limitation. Videos hosted on Flickr are HTML5 video compatible but don’t appear to be embed-able elsewhere.

  • Fallback Support: Yes
  • Embedding: Flash Only
